Best Configuration for 3 Car Seats (or More) https://www.twiniversity.com/best-configuration-for-3-car-seats-or-more/ Tue, 02 Sep 2025 04:01:00 +0000 https://www.twiniversity.com/?p=192181 Wondering how on Earth you’re going to fit 3 car seats in your car? Or even more car seats? We asked other twin parents how they managed to make all the car seats work, so keep reading for ideas on the best configuration for 3 car seats (or more)! Getting two car seats into a car is one thing, but trying to fit 3 or more? Now that is quite the task! Thankfully, these seasoned parents of multiples chimed in with how to fit 3 car seats into a car! We recently asked our twin parent community: Parents of multiples: how did you make 3 (or more) car seats fit in your car? Here’s what other twin parents shared about their car seat configuration for 3 or more kids: The 3-across configuration “Three across for over a year so my wagon could fit in the back. We finally upgraded to a massive SUV that fit kiddos AND wagon comfortably!” — Jenah “The struggle is real. My twins were in Hbb (high-back booster) when the baby arrived and fitting his car seat in took some careful planning. Wishing the girls would have a growth spurt. I do feel it’s a European/UK issue about the 3 seats, as we’re moving back to Australia where the regulations are different and I’m seeing plenty of options that promote themselves as fitting 3 across.” — Rachel “Graco Slimfit 3 across car seats. All fit in RAV4. It’s actually so much more convenient than trying to load one in a third row! Highly recommend.” — Urella.08 “We have an SUV with a third row. Not sure what we will do moving forward, but for now, we have all 3 kids (3, 1, and 1) side by side in the second row. We have the Clek Foonf car seats that are designed for this exact purpose. After having tried a few car seats with my oldest, we just like this brand the most from a safety aspect as well.” — trulia_ “3 across and the 3rd row folded down to fit the stroller plus groceries. One toddler seat and two infant seats for now. Plan to swap all to Diono after we are done with the infant seats and keep them 3 across for a while longer.” — Kyndall “We are HUGE fans of the Diono!! We have three across in the back seat of my Dodge Ram. Works like a charm! Everyone has plenty of room and the wagon slides right into the bed of the truck.” — Sarah The third row configuration “2 Britax bucket seats and one Britax Poplar in a ‘13 Chevy Equinox! Then we got a Kia Carnival so we did Britax Poplar in the 3rd row passenger side, 2nd row passenger seat removed and a Graco Extend-2-fit & Britax advocate in the 2nd row.” — Natalie “Buying a car big enough for them? Honda Odyssey. Magic slide seats. Game changer.” — Tracy “We traded our Jeep in for a Honda Odyssey. I was sad about it at the time but have come to love the Odyssey! We took one of the 2nd row seats entirely out (our model is a 2nd row with 3 across, not two bucket seats) and started with the twins in the third row until my eldest (18 months when we brought the twins home) was big enough to switch to forward facing, then we moved her to the 3rd row behind the empty/removed seat on the passenger side and put the twins in the middle seat and the seat behind the driver’s seat in the 2nd row… …Removing the seat makes for a great landing space when loading/unloading everyone. The kids just climb in and up to their seats (eldest is 4 and the twins are 2.5 now), I close the sliding door behind us while buckling everyone in, and I don’t have to worry about standing out in traffic or anyone running away from the vehicle. Provides extra space for the wagon, groceries, suitcases when traveling, etc too. I highly recommend it if your vehicle model allows.” — Jennifer “We went with Honda Odyssey middle seats slide so my big girl can get to her car seat with the two rear facing in the middle row captain chairs.” — leahgindin “Vauxhall zafira.. my 5 year old in high back booster in the back. Twins in the middle. Out n about nipper fits in the boot. Middle seat for a bag. Tight squeeze but it works.” — Becky “We have the toddler and a twin in the bucket seats and the other twin in the third row. Way easier to toss a car seat back there then wrestle with a toddler lol.” — Shelby Switched to a bigger car… “I got a really big freaking car. An Expedition. Not my favorite car ever but it fits us all, plus the dog, plus sports gear, plus bike rack, etc. Buy used, the kids will trash it.” — hei_hales “Traded in my Acadia for a Suburban. It made the most sense for us since we needed to use the third row while also bringing a stroller!” — mrspaigemendenhall “I had an Audi A4 which did fit 2 baby carriers and a high back booster in the middle, but it was a squeeze and I had to put them all in order. In the end, we got a new car, so my eldest had a bit more space. Citroen C5 Aircross has 3 individual seats across the back and the boot is plenty big enough to fit the double pushchair too.” — Jodie “We couldn’t make 3 car seats fit & having 3 under 3 money was tight… so I had to trade my husband vehicles. I now drive an F-150 and he drives my edge for the time being.” — Ericcaagraves “I had to buy a bigger vehicle. 7 seater. My son is in the very back and the girls are behind me.” — hamish_plus_twins “You get… Continue Reading Best Configuration for 3 Car Seats (or More)

When to Have Your Baby Shower for Twins? https://www.twiniversity.com/when-to-have-your-baby-shower-for-twins/ Tue, 22 Jul 2025 09:50:00 +0000 https://www.twiniversity.com/?p=190353 When you’re planning ahead for TWO on the way, you may be stressed about the timeline for hosting your baby shower for twins. Twin pregnancy can throw more curveballs, so we’re here to share insights from twin parents who’ve been there! When I was pregnant with my twins, I was lucky enough to have my mom and sister-in-law help me plan my twin baby shower. But I vividly remember struggling at first to pinpoint the best date for the shower.  My twin pregnancy had a few additional complications (like high blood pressure and Twin B with a congenital lung birth defect just to name a few). Plus, I knew that the majority of twin pregnancies tend to deliver early. Long story short, I knew in my gut that it was probably best to err on the side of too early than too late. At one point though, I was almost tempted to push my shower back by a few weeks (making it be at 34.5 weeks instead of 31.5 weeks) due to wanting to accommodate my own sister coming in from out of town. I even had to get a little stern with my mom in holding firm to my date and telling her that I couldn’t plan my shower around when it was convenient for my sister.  Thank goodness I didn’t give into that temptation and held steady to the date I preferred. Had I pushed the shower back those two days, I would’ve literally delivered my twins only a day or two after the shower. (Which would have meant zero time to actually set all the gear up and feel ready). But don’t just take my word for it! Keep reading to see what other twin parents have to say about when to have your twin baby shower! We recently asked the Twiniversity community: How many weeks along were you when you had your baby shower for twins? And did you feel like that was good timing, too early, or too late? Here’s what our biggest fans had to say: “25 weeks. I feel like it was good timing. I felt okay physically and I had time to buy stuff after.” “28 weeks and the twins came 3 days shy of 33 weeks—so perfect timing for the shower.” “I actually had 2! First one at 27 weeks with my husband’s family and that felt like good timing. Second one was with my family at 32 weeks and I wish I had done it sooner. I was super uncomfortable at that point, and I was also a little anxious that I wasn’t going to make it to then!” “Missed mine. It was scheduled for 30 weeks.”  “20 weeks.” “26 and 28 the first time with twins. 32 weeks this time (my second go-round with twins).” “I had mine at 33 weeks 6 days, my twins were born 6 days later! I think it was a bit late.” “Didn’t get to have one, but I say have it EARLY for twins.” “Had mine at 25 weeks…only did it early to avoid gathering indoors in the winter! Worked out great!” “33 weeks for me—it was just right.” “29 weeks in case I went early.” “30 weeks was great. My family wanted to do it at 34 weeks but I said that was too late. They came at 33 weeks and 4 days.” “28 weeks and it was perfect timing.” “26 weeks. I was happy with that timing—later would have been hard.” “34 weeks. Too late. I was stressing the babies would come before the shower and I was uncomfortable.” …wondering what to put on your twin baby registry?  Check out when Twiniversity’s next free Twin Ready Registry Event is being held! “4 and a half months because we had to go to inpatient care that next week.” “About 30 weeks. It was perfect timing.” “33 weeks, just in time!” “I was 31 weeks and thank goodness because they came two weeks later.” “30 weeks and it was perfect timing! Still felt cute and had a big ol’ twin belly!” “Mine is at 29/30 weeks and it feels way too late.” “31–too late!” “24 weeks and 32 weeks…24 weeks was great, 32 weeks was way too late.” “Mine was around 33 weeks.” “28 weeks.” “24 weeks.” “30 weeks! Perfect timing for me but I had a feeling I would get to term (38 weeks).” “Had it for 28 weeks but my water broke at 27 weeks. Did it at 35 weeks, and they came home a week later.” “27 weeks.” “28 weeks and it worked out great, but I wouldn’t go any later!” “I was about 7 months into my pregnancy and I felt like that was perfect timing!” Want to feel more prepared and inspired for your baby shower for twins? When to Start Parental Leave for Twins? https://www.twiniversity.com/parental-leave-for-twins/ Tue, 01 Apr 2025 10:00:00 +0000 https://www.twiniversity.com/?p=188054 When you’ve got two little humans ready to make their debut soon, it can be stressful to figure out when to begin your leave from work. For some helpful tips on what to consider with maternity or paternity leave, keep reading! The weeks are counting down quickly as you gear up to welcome your twinnies into the world. But there’s a burning question on your mind: When should you start your maternity leave for twins? Or when should you start your paternity leave for twins? So, let’s go over 6 of the most important considerations for you to keep in mind when figuring it all out! Considerations for when to start parental leave as a twin parent 1. Be flexible With a twin pregnancy, you’ve probably already been told a million times that there are some extra risks for complications. While it can feel overwhelming to have more uncertainty around when your twins will be delivered, it can help to consider all of your options ahead of time.  Ideally, once you begin your second trimester, you should begin seriously researching your parental leave options. With twins, it never hurts to be over-prepared! This way, if you end up delivering much earlier than you expected, you’ve already thought through potential options for an earlier or more extended leave.  Then, once you know the options available to you, it’s a good idea to have a primary plan as well as some back-up plans ready to go.  2. Look up parental leave laws for your country and/or state No matter where you live, parental leave laws are always changing. So make it a priority to do your own homework and understand what the most current laws are for your current place of residence. When you are informed, you can be empowered to make the best decision for yourself and your growing family. It can also help you better advocate for yourself in the event that your workplace isn’t abiding by national or local laws.  For example, in the United States, there’s a law called the Family and Medical Leave Act that spells out how certain employees can be eligible for 12 weeks of job-protected leave for the birth and care of a newborn child.  Within the U.S., you should also check to see your home state’s specific laws and regulations for job-protection and paid leave policies. Some states have mandatory or voluntary policies that spell out requirements for paid leave. Take a look here! Some countries and states also spell policies for pre-birth leave that includes time off of work to accommodate doctor’s appointments. And some spell out additional requirements for how you can stack both maternity leave and paternity leave.  Another factor to consider is if you are part of a union. Some unions have additional resources that you can tap into related to family and medical leave.  For example, when I was pregnant, I was a high school teacher, and I was part of my school district’s union. Our union had a sick bank that each teacher could contribute to yearly. Thank goodness I opted into this contribution because when I had all sorts of additional challenges with my twin pregnancy, I was able to get some additional paid leave by applying to use days from the union’s sick bank.  3. Meet with a social worker Most people don’t realize this, but the hospital where your twins are delivered likely has a social worker. And if for some reason your hospital doesn’t have a social worker, look up your state or local government agency to figure out how you can connect with a social worker.  A licensed clinical social worker can support you with navigating a variety of challenges related to your parental leave.  Here are just a few of the things a social worker can help with: Trust me, this is not a step that you want to skip out on! Talking to the social worker at the hospital where I delivered was a true game-changer for my husband and I as first time parents to twins. Our social worker helped us through the process of applying for Medicaid (since our twins were in the NICU for nearly 3 months). And on top of that, she made us aware of a local organization that helps families in need with covering mortgage payments and utility bills.  4. Talk to human resources and your insurance policy provider Whatever industry you work in, be sure to talk to someone in the human resources department or a person who is in charge of understanding your employer-based health insurance policy. Some companies have unique policies for maternity leave and paternity leave that go beyond what national or state legislation requires as a bare minimum.  Knowing what your specific healthcare plan covers will help you understand all of your options for taking both paid and unpaid leave from your job. In some cases, you could be eligible for short-term disability benefits and child rearing leave as well.  5. Keep in communication with your doctor or healthcare professional Be sure to check in frequently with whoever is part of your healthcare and delivery team.  Whether you plan to deliver at a hospital or with the support of a midwife or doula, keep an open line of communication with them so you are all on the same page with how your pregnancy is progressing.  In some cases, a doctor or other healthcare professional may decide that it is not medically safe for you to work past a certain point in the pregnancy. So definitely feel encouraged to talk to them about your plan for when to start parental leave for your twins. And speak up if you feel like working is becoming too physically demanding on your pregnant body. Which leads us to the final tip on when to start parental leave for twins… 6. Listen to your body While all the above tips are helpful from a logistical perspective, a huge piece of the puzzle to… Continue Reading When to Start Parental Leave for Twins?

Baby Brezza One Step Baby Food Maker Deluxe: Honest Thoughts https://www.twiniversity.com/baby-brezza-one-step-baby-food-maker/ Tue, 03 Dec 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.twiniversity.com/?p=185998 Thinking about investing in a baby food maker or adding it to your baby registry? Here’s a twin mom’s honest take on the Baby Brezza One Step Food Maker Deluxe. When it’s time to introduce your kids to purees, you have a couple of options. You can head down the baby food aisle at the grocery store and grab a jar or pouch. You can spend hours in the kitchen making food from scratch. But for those who want the best of both worlds (fresh and convenient), I offer up a third option: a baby food maker! Personally, I try to avoid overly processed foods for my twins whenever I can. But who has the time (or energy) to whip up homemade baby food from scratch when you’re on your own with two little munchkins to look after? Okay, so I actually did give it a try once, and it took hoursssss to make four cups of butternut squash puree. (Don’t worry, you can laugh with me on this one!) But then I learned about Baby Brezza’s One Step Baby Food Maker Deluxe, and my life was forever changed. It has made feeding my twinnies foods I feel good about a whole lot easier. So in case you’re deciding if this is the right move for you, here are all the reasons I love this baby food maker. It’s a complete system The Baby Brezza One Step Food Maker Deluxe comes with a complete system to make, store and serve baby food. You get the actual food maker itself, three reusable food pouches, filling funnels, and a recipe book. The food pouches are especially genius, and I love that they’re reusable. They hold a lot and are great to take on the go! The funnels were also something I hadn’t seen before, but they sure make filling the pouches so easy. It couldn’t be easier to use If you feel my excitement pouring through this screen, it’s because this thing is so dang easy to use. I’m talking about simplicity at its finest. With just a push of a button, you can steam and automatically blend. This means you can literally set it and forget it. Ten minutes later, you’ll have 3.5 cups of perfect puree. The first time I used the food maker, I truly could not believe it! So trust me, even on your most sleep-deprived days, operating this bad boy is a breeze. No complicated instructions or fancy settings to decipher—just a straightforward, one-step operation. Of course, you can also blend only or steam only, too. But the blend and steam combo is my personal favorite. It actually works Now, let’s get down to business: does it actually work? YUP! The steaming function cooks everything from veggies to meats to perfection, preserving all those essential nutrients that your little ones need to thrive. I was a little skeptical of how it would do blending, but this thing is a beast. It churns out silky-smooth purees, even with sweet potatoes and broccoli! You can keep using it after babies graduate purees But wait, there’s more! The Baby Brezza One Step Baby Food Maker Deluxe isn’t just for baby food. It’s not one of those products you’ll use for a few months while the babies are eating purees and never touch again. It can whip up soups, hard-boiled eggs, sauces, and even smoothies for the whole gang. And with a recipe book chock-full of creative ideas, you’ll never run out of inspiration. I’m excited to keep it around to make my toddlers fruit pouches like applesauce (which would be an intense chore without this delightful food maker). It’s simple to clean With most baby food makers and recipes, you have to dirty multiple dishes to steam and blend. But that’s a hard pass for this twin mama. Thankfully, the Baby Brezza food maker only requires one container, and it can go in the dishwasher. You heard that right. It’s dishwasher safe! And even better, the reusable pouches are too. Final thoughts: is it worth the money? I know what you’re thinking: “But is it worth the investment!?” As a twin parent, let me tell you straight up: yes, it absolutely is. The time and sanity it saves you is priceless, especially if feeding your kids homemade and wholesome foods is important to you! And the fact that you can use it past the puree stage makes it an immediate yes from me. Also, if you were to sit down and add up how much money you save over time from not having to buy all those store-bought baby pouches…it probably even pays for itself in the long-run. I know it sounds way to good to be true, but it’s the real deal. Baby Brezza’s One Step Baby Food Maker Deluxe is a total game-changer for twin parents looking to simplify mealtime without sacrificing nutrition. With its ease-of-use, stellar performance, and versatility, it’s definitely a must-have. So go ahead, treat yourself (and your little ones) to the gift of easy homemade goodness—you won’t regret it. Noise-Canceling Headphones for Babies: Why They’re a Must https://www.twiniversity.com/noise-canceling-headphones-for-babies/ Thu, 21 Nov 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.twiniversity.com/?p=186481 An often overlooked aspect of children’s health is hearing and noise. In this article, you’ll learn why noise-reducing headphones are helpful for your baby’s auditory health. And we’ve also got you covered with a round-up of recommendations! This example will date me, but when I see headphones on infants and babies, it reminds me of the scene from Mr. Holland’s Opus when the mom didn’t cover up the child’s ear during a parade which resulted in deafening her child. A traumatic scene and one I seem to never forget, especially now as a mama.   Sure, you don’t have to watch the movie to understand what a loud parade feels like for an adult. But imagine that same overwhelming noise as an infant. What damage can be done? Keep reading, and you’ll learn all about what sound levels are appropriate for babies as well as recommendations for protective ear wear to keep them safe. How loud is “too loud” for babies and kids?  According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “Noise above 70 decibels (dB) over prolonged periods may start to damage hearing. Noise above 120 dB, such as from a blast or fireworks, can cause immediate, irreversible harm.”  And the Royal National Institute for Deaf People claims that just 15 minutes of exposure to noise averaging 100 dB can cause hearing damage.  Now let’s consider this in terms of everyday noises in our baby’s environment. Think of the well-meaning but often noisy toys that we give to our babies. Some studies (like this one) have found these toys had sounds going as high as 100 decibels!  This is very much Googleable and if you search “baby toys with sounds over 100 decibels,” the answers will surprise you. Noises are everywhere, and when you see words like “irreversible harm,” it puts into perspective how important it is to protect your babies’ ears. In case you’re like me and need concrete examples, here’s 70 decibels is the sound of a washing machine or a dishwasher!  Wild!  Out of curiosity, I searched 100 decibels. That’s pretty much the noise level of a nightclub.  If this information is new to you, rest assured, there’s no need to panic. Because thankfully, we have technology nowadays that can help reduce intense noise when needed. So let’s get into how noise-canceling headphones can help. How can noise-canceling headphones help? Hearing loss caused by loud noises usually begins with damage to the hair cells inside the inner ear. These sensory cells are what convert sound energy into signals that our brain recognizes as sound.  Of course, we may not always have the ability to “turn off” certain sounds in our environment for our little ones. So that’s why noise-canceling or noise-reducing headphones are helpful. They work by limiting the amount of sound that penetrates the inner ear.  In case you’re wondering: Why not just use earplugs? Ear plugs are a good option for adults to reduce environmental sounds. But since they’re so small, there’s a choking risk involved with babies and young children.  So if you find yourself going to a noisy event like a wedding, a firework show, a sporting event, or flying on a plane, definitely consider using headphones!  As always, it’s wise to check with your primary care physician before introducing your child to loud noises. And without further ado, let’s take a look at some popular, cost-friendly ear protection options out there. You’ll notice that the age range for earmuffs varies by brand. Some are 0-18 months, while others have designs that go up to 4 years in age.   Best noise-canceling headphones for babies and young kids 1. Alpine Muffy Baby Ear Protection At a glance: Alpine Muffy Baby Ear Protection comes in 5 different colors, and the headband is anti-slip and adjustable to fit around your babies’ head, no matter their size.  2. Mumba Baby Ear Protection Noise Canceling Headphones At a glance: The Mumba Baby Ear Protection looks more like a traditional headphone without the cord.  It comes in a variety of different colors, and many of the reviews share that their baby slept through the noise that was surrounding them.  One review did mention the padding to be more plastic-like. And these noise canceling-headphones go over the fontanel (the soft spot on your infant’s head). So if that is a concern for you, consult your pediatrician or opt for headphones with a band around the head instead.  3. Nuby Soft Sounds Earmuffs  At a glance: These Nuby Soft Earmuffs have a smaller age range than most earmuffs out there, so that’s something to think about. Like other brands, these also come in a variety of colors, so you can easily differentiate which twin has which set of earmuffs.   Since the age range is shorter, if your baby has a larger head circumference, there’s a chance they won’t fit even with the adjustable band (according to some of the reviews).   4. Schallwerk Ear Defender Mini+ At a glance: The Schallwerk Ear Defender Mini+ comes in fun colors and fun animal prints too. And even though the headphones are ranged for 2 and under, many reviews mention their older children still being able to fit into them. 5. Banz Bubzee Baby Earmuffs At a glance: Banz Bubzee Baby Earmuffs has a headband design that’s adjustable based on the growth of your child. Customer reviews mention that they do fit larger head circumferences well. This brand also has earmuffs designed for older children, too.   A handful of reviews do mention concerns with the headband moving when the baby moves and the material around the ear not being very breathable.   Final thoughts on noise-canceling headphones for babies Noise-reducing headphones and earmuffs are a great way to protect little ears from the loud noises we encounter.  Before making a final decision about which noise-canceling headphones to go with, consider: Also, be sure to ask your pediatrician about their take on noise-canceling headphones. And at the end of the day, trust that you are making the… Continue Reading Noise-Canceling Headphones for Babies: Why They’re a Must
