When to Have Your Baby Shower for Twins? https://www.twiniversity.com/when-to-have-your-baby-shower-for-twins/ Tue, 22 Jul 2025 09:50:00 +0000 https://www.twiniversity.com/?p=190353 When you’re planning ahead for TWO on the way, you may be stressed about the timeline for hosting your baby shower for twins. Twin pregnancy can throw more curveballs, so we’re here to share insights from twin parents who’ve been there! When I was pregnant with my twins, I was lucky enough to have my mom and sister-in-law help me plan my twin baby shower. But I vividly remember struggling at first to pinpoint the best date for the shower.  My twin pregnancy had a few additional complications (like high blood pressure and Twin B with a congenital lung birth defect just to name a few). Plus, I knew that the majority of twin pregnancies tend to deliver early. Long story short, I knew in my gut that it was probably best to err on the side of too early than too late. At one point though, I was almost tempted to push my shower back by a few weeks (making it be at 34.5 weeks instead of 31.5 weeks) due to wanting to accommodate my own sister coming in from out of town. I even had to get a little stern with my mom in holding firm to my date and telling her that I couldn’t plan my shower around when it was convenient for my sister.  Thank goodness I didn’t give into that temptation and held steady to the date I preferred. Had I pushed the shower back those two days, I would’ve literally delivered my twins only a day or two after the shower. (Which would have meant zero time to actually set all the gear up and feel ready). But don’t just take my word for it! Keep reading to see what other twin parents have to say about when to have your twin baby shower! We recently asked the Twiniversity community: How many weeks along were you when you had your baby shower for twins? And did you feel like that was good timing, too early, or too late? Here’s what our biggest fans had to say: “25 weeks. I feel like it was good timing. I felt okay physically and I had time to buy stuff after.” “28 weeks and the twins came 3 days shy of 33 weeks—so perfect timing for the shower.” “I actually had 2! First one at 27 weeks with my husband’s family and that felt like good timing. Second one was with my family at 32 weeks and I wish I had done it sooner. I was super uncomfortable at that point, and I was also a little anxious that I wasn’t going to make it to then!” “Missed mine. It was scheduled for 30 weeks.”  “20 weeks.” “26 and 28 the first time with twins. 32 weeks this time (my second go-round with twins).” “I had mine at 33 weeks 6 days, my twins were born 6 days later! I think it was a bit late.” “Didn’t get to have one, but I say have it EARLY for twins.” “Had mine at 25 weeks…only did it early to avoid gathering indoors in the winter! Worked out great!” “33 weeks for me—it was just right.” “29 weeks in case I went early.” “30 weeks was great. My family wanted to do it at 34 weeks but I said that was too late. They came at 33 weeks and 4 days.” “28 weeks and it was perfect timing.” “26 weeks. I was happy with that timing—later would have been hard.” “34 weeks. Too late. I was stressing the babies would come before the shower and I was uncomfortable.” …wondering what to put on your twin baby registry?  Check out when Twiniversity’s next free Twin Ready Registry Event is being held! “4 and a half months because we had to go to inpatient care that next week.” “About 30 weeks. It was perfect timing.” “33 weeks, just in time!” “I was 31 weeks and thank goodness because they came two weeks later.” “30 weeks and it was perfect timing! Still felt cute and had a big ol’ twin belly!” “Mine is at 29/30 weeks and it feels way too late.” “31–too late!” “24 weeks and 32 weeks…24 weeks was great, 32 weeks was way too late.” “Mine was around 33 weeks.” “28 weeks.” “24 weeks.” “30 weeks! Perfect timing for me but I had a feeling I would get to term (38 weeks).” “Had it for 28 weeks but my water broke at 27 weeks. Did it at 35 weeks, and they came home a week later.” “27 weeks.” “28 weeks and it worked out great, but I wouldn’t go any later!” “I was about 7 months into my pregnancy and I felt like that was perfect timing!” Want to feel more prepared and inspired for your baby shower for twins? Best Preemie Clothes for Your Twin Newborns https://www.twiniversity.com/best-preemie-clothes/ Tue, 18 Mar 2025 10:00:00 +0000 https://www.twiniversity.com/?p=187906 If your twinnies were born early, it might feel stressful trying to find clothes that actually fit them (so they stay warm and snug). So we’re sharing tips on where to find the best preemie baby clothes for your little ones! One of the joys of twin parenthood is having the chance to buy those cute little onesies and imagining your newborn twinnies wearing them. Like the identical matching outfits (cause they’re twins after all) or in the classic pairs ( ketchup and mustard, thing 1 thing 2, etc).  And of course, then posing for those sweet pictures.  Your family can’t resist the pull too!  Even before your twinnies arrive, you’ve got a nice stash of fun pajamas, coordinating outfits, and more.   And it’s all well and good until your babies come super early, and you’ve got to figure out what on Earth to dress them in. Because even those newborn onesies will drown your little preemies.  My twins were born just in time for Christmas and weighed under 5lbs. My MIL had bought them each a Santa onesie sack which was so sweet. Both those onesies were huge!  So, I can attest that there’s definitely quite a difference between preemie and newborn sizes.   But unfortunately, lots of in-person retail stores don’t carry that many preemie sizes if any at all). And if you happen to find a stray preemie outfit, will they have another for the second twin?   It’s a bit frazzling not being able to find the right size for your tiny twinnies. Especially since the chances of a multiple birth being earlier than scheduled is much higher than a singleton.  That’s why we want to make sure you’re equipped with all the insights on where to find the best preemie clothes! But first, what is a preemie size?   As you’ve likely experienced even with your own adult clothing, not all brands are sized equally.  When it comes to preemie baby clothes, the sizing is based on weight and length. But each brand uses slightly different cutoff thresholds for what they consider to be “preemie size.”  If you want to see for yourself, Dreft has a list of common baby clothing brands with their sizing parameters charted out. Most of the charts say preemie size is up to 5 lbs (up to 17”), whereas newborn size is between 5-8 lbs (up to 20”).  You’ll notice some brands even have preemie sizing go up to 6 lbs.   And some preemie baby clothes brands even have sizes that go below preemie size. These are teeny preemie (up to 4 pounds) and micro preemie (up to 3 pounds).  What if my twins are in the NICU? If your babies spend time in the NICU, it’s a good idea to ask the nurses what they need as far as clothing goes. Depending on your babies’ particular medical needs, their medical team may have preferences and guidelines for how you dress them.  Being hooked up to all those wires and a breathing or feeding tube can definitely make dressing your preemie twinnies more challenging (but not impossible!).  Also, many NICUs have a stash of preemie clothes that they will let your twinnies use free of charge. So depending on the length of your stay, you might not even need to go out and buy preemie clothes.  My personal NICU experience as a mom to preemies was “don’t bring anything,” which was nice. Our hospital clothed them, bathed them, and their NICU pods were heated.   So again, definitely ask your NICU nurses what clothing would be helpful logistically. Then you can save money on what preemie baby clothes you buy and go with only what you really need.   And take a look at the two websites below for preemie clothes that are made with NICU babies in mind! Best preemie clothes for NICU babies 1. Perfectly Preemie This site is dedicated to preemie baby clothes, and you can filter by size or style, which is super helpful!  Most of the time, your NICU babies will have monitors on them. So if your hospital requires you to provide clothes, it’s best to have something with more flexibility than a single zip up.   What’s also great about Perfectly Preemie, is they also have sizes smaller than preemie: micro and teeny, each with weight limits next to the names.   2. Preemie Store Another online retailer with the best preemie clothes is Preemie Store. This e-commerce shop sells multiple different preemie clothing brands (including Perfectly Preemie). Since preemies are their specialty, they have micro and teeny options with plenty of options suitable for the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) and PICU (pediatric intensive care unit). Outside of these NICU preemie stores (which are still a great option for non-NICU preemies), there are more mainstream brands that have preemie baby clothes too. Mainstream brands with preemie sizes 1. Carters:  When searching on Carter’s actual brand site, you can apply filters for “preemie” to sort for that specific size.  Personally, I found zippers to be easier than snaps, especially when you’re bleary eyed at 2:00am and not knowing if you’re placing the diaper the right way on.  We’ve definitely woken up a few mornings with the buttons not quite lining up (whoops!).   And Carter’s has sleep & play outfits with a 2-way zipper, which is always a win!  They even have a dedicated section for NICU-friendly preemie baby clothes. 2. Gerber:  Of all the baby branding, Gerber is a household staple. They have a variety of options for preemie baby clothes, along with accessories fitting preemies. Did I mention occasional sales?   3. Little Me You’ll notice many of the kids in your neighborhood or circle will wear the same big name brands. But if you want to stand out from the crowd with something more ‘boutique,’ Little Me has an array of preemie sizes. 4. Monica + Andy Another great brand you’ll see around is Monica + Andy. Their clothes are super cute and they have preemie options for a… Continue Reading Best Preemie Clothes for Your Twin Newborns

Cleaning Baby Bottles: Care Tips and Hacks for Twin Parents https://www.twiniversity.com/cleaning-baby-bottles-for-twins/ Tue, 04 Mar 2025 10:30:00 +0000 https://www.twiniversity.com/?p=187744 When it comes to feeding your infant twins, cleaning all those baby bottles can really feel like a beast of a job to take on. But food safety and limiting the risk of harmful bacteria is so important for tiny humans with developing immune systems. So here are some helpful tips and hacks for all that bottle washing you’ll be doing as a twin parent.  Looking back on those early newborn twin days cleaning baby bottles, I now wonder whyyyy? (Especially when I see my toddler twins take a mysteriously old cheerio from their car seat and put it in their mouth. Lol, cringe.) However, when I think back on those infant times, I wouldn’t have done anything different about how clean their bottles were. Newborns and infants have next to no immunity towards bacterial and viral pathogens. Every germ sticks. (My daycare parents, where you at?  You know what I’m talking about).   This means that the germs that find their way into your little ones’ mouths have the potential to cause some potentially serious harm. And of course, exposure to some germs helps them build immunity over time, but it’s best not to overwhelm their developing systems when at all possible. So, let’s quickly talk about bacteria and food safety.  Bacteria like to grow in warm environments filled with food. And what do infants and newborns eat/drink?  Warm breastmilk and/or formula chock full of nutrients for those hungry, hungry germs. Thankfully, many foodborne illnesses can be fought with good kitchen cleaning and sanitation habits.  Just like washing your hands will bring down your chances of catching a cold, the same goes with cleaning baby bottles. Washing and sanitizing properly, especially in those first few weeks, can help limit foodborne germs and bacteria.   So without further ado, here are some helpful tips and hacks for cleaning baby bottles carefully for those sweet twinnies of yours! 1. Make sure your hands are clean first  This may give you some PTSD back to those early COVID-19 days. But before handling your twins’ bottles, make sure you wash your hands first.  You’re probably doing this already, but with mom brain (plus changing all those poopy diapers all day), we know it doesn’t hurt to have those little reminders! 2. Completely disassemble the bottles Again, this one may seem obvious. But with all the high-tech baby bottles on the market these days, be sure to fully disassemble every part.  For example, make sure you take the nipple out of the bottle collar. (This is the ring-like part that fastens onto the bottle around the nipple). And if you’re using Dr. Brown’s bottles, remove and take apart the internal venting parts.  Having the bottles completely deconstructed will make sure that every little nook and cranny is able to be cleaned and dried fully.  3. Choose your washing method  There are a few ways you can clean baby bottles with our twentieth century technological advancements. Of course, you can always handwash. But you can also use your dishwashing machine or a bottle washer.  Here’s some insight on each bottle washing method! Hand-washing baby bottles While hand-washing may take the most “effort” on your part, it’s also the quickest method for cleaning baby bottles. So here’s how to clean your twinnies’ bottles safely and thoroughly: 1. Empty out any remaining milk or formula first.  For safety, any remaining formula and breastmilk should be thrown out within an hour after starting the bottle feeding. This is because once the baby’s saliva mixes in with the milk or formula, it can cause bacteria to grow after sitting out.  2. Do a basic rinse of the bottle to get out any excess formula/milk.  3. Use a dedicated washing basin like this one.  Avoid cleaning the bottles directly in your kitchen sink. Sinks tend to build up with germs over time (even when kept clean) since there’s always water hanging around them. If you don’t want to buy a legit cleaning basin, you can simply use a large mixing bowl. Just make sure that you only use that bowl for bottle cleaning (at least for the foreseeable future).  4. Fill the washing basin with soap and hot water, soak, and clean.  Once you fill the basin, let the bottles soak in the water for a few minutes to loosen up the milk or formula residue. Then, using a dedicated bottle and nipple brush like this one, carefully clean each bottle part. Lastly, rinse the items under clean, hot running water.  If you want to learn more about safe soaps and cleaning solutions for newborns, check out this article!  5. Dry in a dedicated drying rack area.  To make sure the bottles dry completely and safely, avoid placing them in such a way that air isn’t able to flow freely. You want to make sure there is air flow underneath so that the leftover moisture doesn’t get trapped inside of the bottles and bottle parts.  Also, steer clear of using dish towels for drying as they could house bacteria from coming into contact with dirty dishes or hands.  Here are two examples of safe drying areas and drying organizers:  Dr. Brown’s Drying Tower This Dr. Brown’s Drying Tower is great for drying and organizing the whole gang of bottle parts including the nipples, collars, bottle, caps, and even the brush! The way that this drying rack is set up also allows for tons of airflow to ensure each part dries completely.  Boon Lawn Baby Bottle Drying Rack The Boon drying rack provides plenty of airflow and has an antimicrobial tray to help limit the growth of mold and mildew. It’s also a great place for drying pump parts since the drying space accommodates all sorts of sizes and dimensions! Twiniversity tip: If you get the Boon drying rack, be sure to remove and thoroughly clean the tray every few days. This will avoid extra water accumulating in the tray which could lead to mold and mildew.  Using your dishwasher Yes, you… Continue Reading Cleaning Baby Bottles: Care Tips and Hacks for Twin Parents

Baby Brezza One Step Baby Food Maker Deluxe: Honest Thoughts https://www.twiniversity.com/baby-brezza-one-step-baby-food-maker/ Tue, 03 Dec 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.twiniversity.com/?p=185998 Thinking about investing in a baby food maker or adding it to your baby registry? Here’s a twin mom’s honest take on the Baby Brezza One Step Food Maker Deluxe. When it’s time to introduce your kids to purees, you have a couple of options. You can head down the baby food aisle at the grocery store and grab a jar or pouch. You can spend hours in the kitchen making food from scratch. But for those who want the best of both worlds (fresh and convenient), I offer up a third option: a baby food maker! Personally, I try to avoid overly processed foods for my twins whenever I can. But who has the time (or energy) to whip up homemade baby food from scratch when you’re on your own with two little munchkins to look after? Okay, so I actually did give it a try once, and it took hoursssss to make four cups of butternut squash puree. (Don’t worry, you can laugh with me on this one!) But then I learned about Baby Brezza’s One Step Baby Food Maker Deluxe, and my life was forever changed. It has made feeding my twinnies foods I feel good about a whole lot easier. So in case you’re deciding if this is the right move for you, here are all the reasons I love this baby food maker. It’s a complete system The Baby Brezza One Step Food Maker Deluxe comes with a complete system to make, store and serve baby food. You get the actual food maker itself, three reusable food pouches, filling funnels, and a recipe book. The food pouches are especially genius, and I love that they’re reusable. They hold a lot and are great to take on the go! The funnels were also something I hadn’t seen before, but they sure make filling the pouches so easy. It couldn’t be easier to use If you feel my excitement pouring through this screen, it’s because this thing is so dang easy to use. I’m talking about simplicity at its finest. With just a push of a button, you can steam and automatically blend. This means you can literally set it and forget it. Ten minutes later, you’ll have 3.5 cups of perfect puree. The first time I used the food maker, I truly could not believe it! So trust me, even on your most sleep-deprived days, operating this bad boy is a breeze. No complicated instructions or fancy settings to decipher—just a straightforward, one-step operation. Of course, you can also blend only or steam only, too. But the blend and steam combo is my personal favorite. It actually works Now, let’s get down to business: does it actually work? YUP! The steaming function cooks everything from veggies to meats to perfection, preserving all those essential nutrients that your little ones need to thrive. I was a little skeptical of how it would do blending, but this thing is a beast. It churns out silky-smooth purees, even with sweet potatoes and broccoli! You can keep using it after babies graduate purees But wait, there’s more! The Baby Brezza One Step Baby Food Maker Deluxe isn’t just for baby food. It’s not one of those products you’ll use for a few months while the babies are eating purees and never touch again. It can whip up soups, hard-boiled eggs, sauces, and even smoothies for the whole gang. And with a recipe book chock-full of creative ideas, you’ll never run out of inspiration. I’m excited to keep it around to make my toddlers fruit pouches like applesauce (which would be an intense chore without this delightful food maker). It’s simple to clean With most baby food makers and recipes, you have to dirty multiple dishes to steam and blend. But that’s a hard pass for this twin mama. Thankfully, the Baby Brezza food maker only requires one container, and it can go in the dishwasher. You heard that right. It’s dishwasher safe! And even better, the reusable pouches are too. Final thoughts: is it worth the money? I know what you’re thinking: “But is it worth the investment!?” As a twin parent, let me tell you straight up: yes, it absolutely is. The time and sanity it saves you is priceless, especially if feeding your kids homemade and wholesome foods is important to you! And the fact that you can use it past the puree stage makes it an immediate yes from me. Also, if you were to sit down and add up how much money you save over time from not having to buy all those store-bought baby pouches…it probably even pays for itself in the long-run. I know it sounds way to good to be true, but it’s the real deal. Baby Brezza’s One Step Baby Food Maker Deluxe is a total game-changer for twin parents looking to simplify mealtime without sacrificing nutrition. With its ease-of-use, stellar performance, and versatility, it’s definitely a must-have. So go ahead, treat yourself (and your little ones) to the gift of easy homemade goodness—you won’t regret it. How to Get More Gifts from Your Twin Registry https://www.twiniversity.com/getting-people-to-buy-from-your-baby-registry/ Tue, 05 Nov 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.twiniversity.com/?p=186231 Worried your baby shower guests will go rogue and totally disregard your registry items? Not to worry, we’re here to share practical ways you can get people to actually buy from your baby registry (without being pushy). So you’re expecting twins, and you’ve put together your dream registry. It’s got all the exact items you know you’ll need and that fit the aesthetic of your home and nursery.  But as lots of parents out there know, simply putting an item on your registry doesn’t guarantee it will get purchased. So what’s a twin mama to do? We’ve been there, and we asked other mamas to chime in with their wisdom to help us compile some helpful advice.  Include the registry info on your shower invitation This may sound super obvious, but it’s still worth mentioning. Make sure you (or whoever creates your shower invites) actually puts the registry link on the invitation. While you may want your invites to look super cute or mesh with your shower/nursery theme, it’s easy to get lost in the cute visuals and overlook key details like your registry.  So whether you’re doing an evite or snail mail, triple check that the registry info is clearly visible and accessible. If you go the QR code route, make sure the QR code generator you’re using won’t expire the link. Make your messaging courteous but clear Wherever you include a link to your registry, you can strike a balance between being direct yet polite.  Here are some helpful examples for respectful and tasteful wording to encourage people to stick to the registry: Reasons we love this messaging: helps dissuade folks from purchasing clothes and toys and mentions that the registry items are very much needed for baby Reasons we love this messaging: it doesn’t assume they’ll get a gift, and it highlights the thought that went into choosing each registry item Reasons we love this messaging: it begins with gratitude and also emphasizes that the registry items would make the best gifts Include a variety of items and prices You’re likely to have folks from all walks of life who want to give a gift. Retired relatives, your friend who just finished grad school, your cousin who’s on her third baby.  Keep this in mind when you put your registry together. Including items with a range of prices can ensure that all your guests have a gift they can purchase at a comfortable price point.  Of course, you’ll need those big ticket items like cribs and a sturdy double stroller. But you’ll also need smaller everyday items like swaddle blankets and burp cloths.  For these pricier items, be sure to allow group gifting. This lets people contribute to a portion of those bigger must-have items and feel like they’re gifting you something you really need without having to shoulder the full price on their own. A win-win for both of you! And keep in mind sometimes people enjoy giving the fun, cutesy items. Sure, you may not want to overload your registry with toys and clothes. But adding at least a few of those items is helpful for two reasons. For one, it helps give people a glimpse into your style. And two, it gives people a chance to give a fun item alongside a more practical item. Talk about your registry (especially to the right people) Talking about your registry is key too! If the topic arises when you’re with folks who may be looking for a gift to give, mention that you have a registry. Showing excitement about the items you have on there will remind friends and family that you really want those particular items.  Another way to spread the word is by enlisting the help of a few key allies. Think about which people in your life other guests may turn to when asking about what gift(s) to buy. Your mom, your MIL, your best friend, your SIL, even a coworker. Whoever it is for you, get them on board early so they can help direct inquiring folks to your registry.’ One teacher mama who was pregnant with twins had a coworker ask about her registry info. This ended up being such a blessing for her because the sweet coworker ended up sharing that info with other teachers who purchased some of the remaining registry items! Invite people to your registry via email In some cases, you may already have emails for people you’re inviting to your baby shower. Consider sending them an email invitation that includes all the information they’ll need to access your registry.  If this makes you feel uncomfortable because you feel like you’re bothering people, here’s something to keep in mind. Life gets busy, and people may simply forget or wait until the last minute to buy shower gifts.  Sending them a helpful e-reminder will actually make their life easier since they’ll have all the information they need at their fingertips. You’d be surprised at how many people actually appreciate the guidance and specificity of a registry. Especially since baby items tend to evolve so rapidly over the years.  Keep your registry organized Wherever you decide to host your registry, take the extra time to make sure it’s organized. Using categories can help people find what they’re looking for.  You can also consider marking items as “must-have” or “favorite” so people know they’re a top priority. One new mama mentioned that once people started buying items, she would go in and push her favorites back to the top so they would be seen first. Ask for help Some people may hesitate to buy from your baby registry simply because they feel you don’t need a lot of the items on there. Initially, this may sound annoying. But if this is your debut into parenting, realize it can be hard to decipher the essentials from the nice-to-haves. That’s why we suggest getting some help with putting your registry together.  Your best bet is to run your registry by another… Continue Reading How to Get More Gifts from Your Twin Registry
